Meet Steve Fisher
"Every soldier has a story. Every historical record has a context. My work is to connect the two."
I am a Service-Disabled U.S. Army Veteran, military historian, and archival research specialist. My passion for history began with the American Civil War, but my expertise and interests now span broader American military history and historic preservation research.
As a former Sergeant First Class with sixteen years of service and combat experience, I bring a unique combination of practical military knowledge and advanced academic training to every project. I earned a Master’s Degree in Military History and am currently a doctoral student in History. This background allows me to interpret military records, operational documents, and archival collections with both technical accuracy and genuine understanding of the soldier’s experience.
Military Service
My sixteen years in the United States Army fundamentally shaped how I approach historical research. Service taught me to think in terms of organizations, logistics, leadership, command climate, and the human realities of military life. These experiences give me valuable insight when analyzing historical military records from any era.
Academic Journey
After completing my M.A. in Military History, I continued my studies as a doctoral student in History. My academic work focuses on leadership, institutions, communication, and the human experience of war. I am particularly skilled at reconstructing individual and unit stories through careful analysis of primary sources.
Research Philosophy
History is more than dates and battles — it is the story of people. My goal is not simply to locate records, but to reconstruct documented experiences through rigorous analysis of military service records, pension files, medical records, unit histories, correspondence, and other archival materials.
I provide professional archival research, historical analysis, and consulting services for families, authors, attorneys, organizations, and government agencies.
Beyond the Archives
In addition to research, I enjoy sharing history through my YouTube channel Steve Fisher History – “Let’s Look Again”, public speaking, and supporting historic preservation efforts. I have volunteered with the Gettysburg Foundation and the Camp Curtin Historical Society.
