Meet Steve Fisher
"Every soldier has a story. Every historical record has a context. My work is to connect the two."
I am a historian specializing in the American Civil War, with a passion for uncovering the documented experiences of the soldiers, families, and communities who lived through America's defining conflict.
As a former U.S. Army Sergeant First Class with combat experience, military historian, and doctoral student, I bring together military experience, academic scholarship, and archival research to help others better understand the past. Whether I am researching a Civil War ancestor, speaking before a historical society, or studying primary sources in an archive, my goal remains the same: to make history meaningful, accurate, and deeply human.
Military Service
My sixteen years in the United States Army shaped how I approach historical research.
Military service taught me to think in terms of organizations, logistics, leadership, and the realities of life in uniform. Those experiences allow me to interpret nineteenth-century military records with an appreciation for how armies functioned beyond the battlefield.
Rather than seeing service records as isolated documents, I view them as pieces of a larger story about the people who served, the units they belonged to, and the world in which they lived.
Academic Journey
My formal study of history has been driven by one question:
How can we better understand the human experience of the American Civil War?
After earning my master’s degree in military history, I’ve continued my education as a doctoral student in history, where my work has increasingly focused on moving beyond battles alone to explore leadership, institutions, communication, and the lives of ordinary Americans during the Civil War.
My research combines careful analysis of primary sources with a commitment to historical accuracy and thoughtful interpretation.
Research Philosophy
History is more than dates and battles.
It is the story of people.
Every soldier's service deserves to be understood within its historical context. My goal is not simply to locate records, but to reconstruct documented lives through careful analysis of military records, archival collections, newspapers, pension files, letters, diaries, and other primary sources.
Good historical research does more than answer questions.
It helps us understand why those answers mattered.
Beyond the Archives
History is meant to be shared.
In addition to archival research, I enjoy speaking to historical societies, participating in public history programs, and supporting organizations dedicated to preserving Civil War history. As a volunteer with the Gettysburg Foundation and through my work with the Camp Curtin Historical Society, I have the privilege of helping connect communities with the stories that shaped them.
Whether in an archive, on a battlefield, or beside a historical marker, I believe history comes alive through conversation and careful interpretation.
